Horsemanship Academies

9:00 – 12:00 Academy in session

12:00 – 1:00 Lunch Break

1:00 – 4:00 Academy in Session

Our Horsemanship Academies focus on horsemanship as it relates to western riding, drawing on both the time-honored techniques of dressage and balanced riding techniques of modern day legend Wendy Murdoch.

Our academies are customized based on the developmental level of the participants (and their horses if applicable), choosing from the following areas and depending on the participants’ areas of interest. Academy size ranges from 2 to 4 participants.

Preparing to ride: Gathering your horse, grooming, saddling, bridling, with discussion about what goes into a cowboy’s rig and why.

Ground Work: Literally “from the ground up” you will begin to establish a relationship with the horse. You will begin to understand and establish “feel,” the value of a balanced seat, and the mutual gratification of moving as one with your horse.

Arena Riding: Practice riding with a balanced seat with proper reining for effective communication. Practice the use of direct and indirect reins; work on lateral flexion; develop a soft “feel” with float in the reins; understand the foot fall in all three gaits and be able to set off on the correct lead; and conduct turns, leg yields and back up.

9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with an hour for lunch. Lunch provided.
