December was a busy month at the ranch, including the return of
Semper Fi Foundation’s Jinx McCain Horsemanship Program (Team 1 of 3).

Bob KingUnder the watchful eye of our Managing Director, Bob King, the group continued to develop cowboying skills of horsemanship, stockmanship, and roping in preparation to participate in a spring branding that JMHP has planned for them.

This week for JMHP was sponsored by the Zable Foundation who’s generous support is greatly appreciated.

The evening western arts & trades classes that are hosted by Horse of the Sun Ranch give the veterans both practical skills and introductions to possible apprenticeship opportunities when they return home. During this recent session the evenings were filled incorporating learned skills in rawhide braiding and leatherworking to create beautifully covered canteens to carry on their rides. Many thanks again to leather working instructor and host, Billy Lang, along with braiding instructor Sharon Paulin.

Our guests this week also included Semper Fi participant Charles Caswell and renowned western photographer Karsten Balsley.

Charlie is being mentored by Karsten as part of the Jinx McCain Apprenticeship Program and shared these photos with us.
